Allignments
There are seven basic alignments in Steel Storm: Order (Principled), Order (Practical), Order (Theoretical), Neutral, Chaos (Principled), Chaos (Practical), and Chaos (Theoretical).
Order
Order (Principled): This is probably the closest you get to a pure "good" alignment in Steel Storm. You are on the side of order, as you believe that order is the proper way for human interactions to be - that is, you believe in fairness, justice, and honesty. As such, you fight against all activities that you see taking away from the social order - i.e. most crimes. You'll also be likely to step up and assist the victim of an injustice, but not necessarily just anyone for no reason.
Order (Practical): You are on the side of order, as an orderly society allows you to best further your own aims. So, in that sense, you're most likely to follow the rules, and to help people if it is in your interest, or furthers your cause. You see order as the straightest path to your goals, and anything that disrupts the order, for yourself and others, as an unnecessary hassle, to be avoided whenever possible.
Order (Theoretical): The hardcore. You believe that it is man's duty to fight off the forces of chaos and entropy by creating the most amount of order and civilization as possible. You abide rules and regulations to the letter, unless, of course, the rules themselves would lead to more chaos. You will also tend to help people regardless of their situation, as a prosperous and productive person will increase the cumulative amount of order. These type of characters may be the most insufferable, but will also be the most willing to doggedly pursue their goals, as they believe it is up to them to make the world the best and most ordered place possible.
Neutral
Neutral: You don't much care about order and chaos beyond acknowledging their existence. All you want to do is live your life, and pursue the goals that are important to you - you don't have much of and overarching duty to either side. Basically existentialist, caring primarily about themselves and their own communities, as opposed to the fate of the world, in most things. They will fight dearly to protect that which is important to them, but they will not feel the need to fight battles that do not affect them directly.
Chaos
Chaos (Principled): Yeah, I know, it sound weird, but it actually makes sense. These are the kind of people who believe that the "order" imposed by a rigidly structured society may actually harm those that it strives to protect. Think of these people as something akin to mild anarchists - they would prefer that people be able to determine their own lives completely, without any interference from anyone else. To that end, they may appreciate advances in technology, but their idea of "civilization" has less to do with structure than it does to do with the ability for everyone to live up to their fullest potential, regardless of regulations that might hold them back. Of course, this also makes for less support structures for the people who depend on the government... but they'd prefer that you don't mention that. In general, they are willing to help those in need of assistance, but they will never help, and in fact will do what they can to oppose, anyone who they see as working as an agent of the government. In essence, what they strive for is a "disordered order" where everyone is free, regardless of what that might entail.
Chaos (Practical): Your run-of-the-mill ne'er-do-well. This kind of person sees order as a hindrance, rather than a help, towards achieving their ends. Therefore, they have no qualms about sowing chaos and disorder, so long as it will help them achieve their goals - ergo, they would be perfectly willing to set a small fire in an inn to cause people to evacuate, then wait until everyone had left, go in and douse the flames, and clean out the residents' valuables while they were at it. However, they wouldn't set the building on fire for no reason, as that would gain them nothing. They will condone following the law as a means to keep them from suffering adverse consequences, but have no respect for it other than that. They might help people for a reward, but would be much more likely to be thinking of ways to rip them off for even more while doing so...
Chaos (Theoretical): The really, really nasty. These people hold the belief that order and civilization must be destroyed, and that chaos must reign, for them to achieve their ultimate ends. As a result, they see laws as things that are meant to be broken, and have no qualms whatsoever about destroying or looting anything in their path. They don't care about following the law to avoid trouble, and will fight authority tooth and nail when cornered - if they are eventually caught and imprisoned, they will spend all their time trying to think of ways to get free, and subsequently return and bomb the prison into the ground. These characters are what might be considered to be truyl evil, as they seem to bring desctruction everywhere they go. They can usually be found following some elemental lord or the generic "forces of chaos," and generally expect to be eventually rewarded for their destructive deeds with unimaginable power.
